Exercise May Help With Menopause Symptoms
According to the Associated Press, the National Institutes of Health is looking into multiple issues related to menopause, including depression cognitive and sexual function. One of the goals is to see whether or not a regular fitness regime will help ease the symptoms associated with the change.
There has not been a proven link between exercise and an easing of the symptoms associated with menopause, though other studies suggest a causal link could exist. Regular engagement in fitness activities has been shown to fight depression, contribute to better sleep patterns and improve one's feeling of wellness. In addition, exercise sheds unwanted pounds.
A study in the August/September 2002 issue of the American College of Sports Medicine's Health & Fitness Journal suggested that exercise can alleviate hot flashes, night sweats and sleep disturbances. However, there has not been a large follow-up to this study.
Nonetheless, the benefits a regular fitness regime extend far beyond menopause and can help both women and men of all ages. Regardless of life stage, the potential gains from exercising are too great to not be active.
