Fish - Good and Bad

Two new studies published in the Archives of Ophthalmology reinforce the results of previous studies that eating fish reduces the risk of macular degeneration. (Macular degeneration can lead to blindness.)

Fish is a very healthy food. Unfortunately, many types of fish, including salmon, contain mercury, which is dangerous. Even organic fish can contain mercury because of groundwater contamination.

We wish we could encourage people to eat more fish, but we do not believe it is safe do so. Rather, we suggest limiting fish consumption to a few servings per month. The risks from mercury consumption, in our opinion, offset the potential health benefits from eating fish more often.
