Put The Fun Back In Fitness
On the train this morning, I read two good articles about kids and fun. One was in the Chicago Sun-Times and one aired yesterday on NPR's MarketPlace.
Both got me thinking about how dogmatic fitness has become. Treadmills have set programs. Spinning is done in a class setting, often to blaring music and sweaty (and sometimes smelly) participants. Running requires a heart rate monitor and wick-free clothing. Even softball requires a league.
Having an exercise program is a good thing, but having fun is also important. Take your dog for a long walk. Ride a bike outdoors (when it's not so $#@%!!! hot). Kick a ball around with your kids. Exercise is about moving around and staying active. Just remember that exercise should be enjoy - you can burn plenty of calories by chasing after poorly tossed frisbees.
