Why You Should Go Camping (and Hiking) This Weekend

Make plans to go camping this weekend, especially Saturday night.

Why? Two words: meteor shower. On Saturday night, the Perseid Meteor Shower is going to make its annual return. Although it won't be as spectacular is in other years because of the moon, it should still make for some great star gazing. (See Space.com for more about the shower.)

Best places to see the shower are away from urban centers, and preferably at elevation. Many national and state parks will have special meteor shower events, which could make the night more interesting.

Plus, if you’re at a park, you’re more likely to go hiking. Hiking burns a lot of calories and getting out into nature relieves stress. Just make sure to bring lots of water, sun tan lotion and bug spray. (Probably would be a good idea to bring the water and bug spray to the meteor shower as well.)

Plus, hiking during the day makes it easier to justify baking some smores over the campfire at night. :)
