Religion and Food

We attended an interfaith Thanksgiving service last night. After the service, a reception was held.

The idea behind the reception was good one – give people of different faiths a chance to socialize with each other. Unfortunately, the choice of food could have been much better. Multiple tables were lined with desserts, particularly cookies, cakes and brownies. There was also plenty of punch. In the middle of the room, in a spot that was not easy to get to, was a sole plate of fruit.

We realize that taste buds prefer dessert over fruit, but religious and congregational leaders need to place a bigger emphasis on physical health. Yes, people go to places of worship for spiritual well-being, but there is little reason not to encourage congregants work on their physical well-being as well. Even small things such as replacing some of the dessert trays with fruit and vegetable trays or asking for people to bring healthy dishes to potluck functions can make a difference.
