High Intensity Exercise Might Be Better For Diabetics

Researchers at the University of Western Australia believe that high intensity exercise might be better for diabetics. A smaller decline in blood sugar levels occurred following high intensity exercise than moderate intensity exercise. The study was published in Diabetes Care.

The researchers gather a group of seven adults with Type 1 diabetes. Six took multiple insulin injections throughout the day, while one was on a twice daily injection routine. The moderate exercise workout was the equivalent of 30 minutes of light jogging. The high intensity exercise involved 30 minutes of cycling with sprints interjected every two minutes - a proxy to simulate team sports. Following the workouts, blood sugar levels were monitored. The decline in the blood sugar levels was smaller in following the high intensity workout.
