Getting Pregnant After Weight Loss Surgery

The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle published an article this morning about how long women should wait to get pregnant after having weight loss surgery. A gynecologist at Rochester General Hospital recommends waiting 12-18 months between having weight loss surgery and getting pregnant. In addition, he recommends supervision and vitamin intake.

NetSweat.com Comments: We have not seen any accepted guidelines concerning weight loss surgery and pregnancy. The most prudent move is to talk to both the surgeon who conducted the surgery and to your gynecologist before making the decision to get pregnant.

There is probably not enough evidence about the effect of gastric bypass or gastric banding on pregnancy for formal protocols to have been developed, which is another thing that should be considered before pursuing weight loss surgery.
